I came across a wonderful word yesterday – bibble<\/strong> – which means to eat and\/or drink noisily, or to tipple. Or in Yiddish it means to worry.<\/p>\n It comes from the Middle English bibben<\/em> (to drink), from the Latin bib\u014d<\/em> (I drink), from Proto-Indo-European *peh\u2083-<\/em> (to drink) [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n If you’re a bibbling bibbler, you may need a bib<\/strong>, which comes from the same root, and originally meant to drink heartily [source<\/a>]. While bibbling, maybe you’ll engage in some bibble-babble<\/a> (idle talk, babble), possibly in a bibbery<\/a> (drinking house), which would be bibacious<\/a>.<\/p>\n The words imbibe<\/strong>, potion<\/strong> and potable<\/strong> come from the same root, as do words for to drink<\/strong> in various languaages, including: \u00f3l<\/em> (Irish), \u00f2l<\/em> (Scottish Gaelic), yfed<\/em> (Welsh), eva<\/em> (Cornish), boire (French), and beber<\/em> (Spanish, Portuguese, Galician, Asturian & Aragonese).<\/p>\n Words for beer<\/strong> Slavic languages come from the same root as well: pivo<\/em> (Croatian, Czech, Slovak & Slovenian), piwo<\/em> (Polish, Sorbian), and \u043f\u0438\u0432\u043e<\/em> (Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Macedonian & Serbian).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" I came across a wonderful word yesterday – bibble – which means to eat and\/or drink noisily, or to tipple.
