Or in Yiddish it means to worry.<\/p>\n<p>It comes from the Middle English <em>bibben<\/em> (to drink), from the Latin <em>bib\u014d<\/em> (I drink), from Proto-Indo-European <em>*peh\u2083-<\/em> (to drink) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/bibble\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a bibbling bibbler, you may need a <strong>bib<\/strong>, which comes from the same root, and originally meant to drink heartily [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/bib#English\">source<\/a>]. While bibbling, maybe you&#8217;ll engage in some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/Bibble-babble\">bibble-babble<\/a> (idle talk, babble), possibly in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/bibbery\">bibbery<\/a> (drinking house), which would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefreedictionary.com\/bibacious\">bibacious<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The words <strong>imbibe<\/strong>, <strong>potion<\/strong> and <strong>potable<\/strong> come from the same root, as do words for <strong>to drink<\/strong> in various languaages, including: <em>\u00f3l<\/em> (Irish), <em>\u00f2l<\/em> (Scottish Gaelic), <em>yfed<\/em> (Welsh), <em>eva<\/em> (Cornish), boire (French), and <em>beber<\/em> (Spanish, Portuguese, Galician, Asturian &amp; Aragonese).<\/p>\n<p>Words for <strong>beer<\/strong> Slavic languages come from the same root as well: <em>pivo<\/em> (Croatian, Czech, Slovak &amp; Slovenian), <em>piwo<\/em> (Polish, Sorbian), and <em>\u043f\u0438\u0432\u043e<\/em> (Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Macedonian &amp; Serbian).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I came across a wonderful word yesterday &#8211; bibble &#8211; which means to eat and\/or drink noisily, or to tipple.
