In most Slavic languages the word for bread is chleb<\/strong> or something similar: Czech & Polish: chleb<\/em>, Slovak: chlieb<\/em>, Russian & Belarusian: \u0445\u043b\u0435\u0431<\/em>, Ukrainian: \u0445\u043b\u0456\u0431<\/em>, Bulgarian: \u0445\u043b\u044f\u0431<\/em>, Macedonian: \u043b\u0435\u0431<\/em>.<\/p>\n

These words all comes from the Proto-Slavic *xl\u011bb\u044a<\/em> (bread), from the Proto-Germanic *hlaibaz<\/em> (bread). [source<\/a>]. *hlaibaz<\/em> is also the root of the English word loaf, the German Laib<\/em> (loaf), and words for loaf in other Germanic languages [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n

However, in Slovenian the word for bread is kruh<\/strong>, which means circle or ring in Czech, although the Czech word probably comes from a different root [source<\/a>]. It comes from the Proto-Slavic *krux\u044a<\/em> (chunk, bread), which comes from *krews<\/em> (crush, break) [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n
