{"id":15628,"date":"2018-05-29T12:24:05","date_gmt":"2018-05-29T11:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=15628"},"modified":"2018-05-29T12:24:05","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T11:24:05","slug":"polyglot-gathering-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=15628","title":{"rendered":"Polyglot Gathering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This afternoon I&#8217;m off to Bratislava for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polyglotbratislava.com\/\">#PolyglotGathering<\/a> &#8211; 5 days of talking and learning about languages, meeting other language enthusiasts, and having fun.<\/p>\n<p>This will be my first trip to Bratislava, though I have been through it before when travelling between Vienna and Budapest. I was going to go to the Bratislava at this time last year for the Gathering, but decided to cancel that trip, unfortunately, after breaking my ankle.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be doing a talk on &#8216;Deconstructing Language&#8217; on Friday morning. It will look mainly at where words come from, and how and why they change over time. I will also talk a bit about how grammar develops.<\/p>\n<p>For the past few months I&#8217;ve been learning some Slovak, mainly with the <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.goethe.sk&#038;hl=en_US\">50 languages app<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memrise.com\/course\/50432\/basic-slovak\/\">Memrise<\/a>.
