{"id":15508,"date":"2018-05-05T13:15:17","date_gmt":"2018-05-05T12:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=15508"},"modified":"2018-05-05T13:15:17","modified_gmt":"2018-05-05T12:15:17","slug":"morning-food-and-early-meals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=15508","title":{"rendered":"Morning food and early meals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/breakfast.gif\" width=\"208\" height=\"208\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 20px 50px;\" alt=\"Breakfast in Northern Germanic languages\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I learnt that the Danish word for breakfast is <strong>morgenmad<\/strong> [\u02c8m\u0252\u02d0\u0252n\u02ccma\u00f0] (&#8220;morning food&#8221;), which makes sense [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/morgenmad\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Lunch is <strong>frokost<\/strong> (&#8220;early meal&#8221;), which made me think of the German word for breakfast <strong>Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck<\/strong> (&#8220;early piece&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frokost<\/strong> comes from the Middle Low German <em>vr\u014dkost<\/em> (early meal), from <em>vr\u014d<\/em> (early) and <em>kost<\/em> (meal, food) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/frokost\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Norwegian <strong>frokost<\/strong> is breakfast, and lunch is <strong>lunsj<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In Swedish breakfast is <strong>frukost<\/strong> and lunch is <strong>lunch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In Danish dinner is <em>aftensmad<\/em> (&#8220;evening meal&#8221;), or <strong>middag<\/strong> (&#8220;midday&#8221;), which also means noon, banquet or lunch. In Norwegian and Swedish <strong>middag<\/strong> means dinner, noon or midday [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/middag\">source<\/a>]. Somewhat confusing!<\/p>\n<p>In Icelandic the meals are: <strong>morgunmatur<\/strong> (breakfast &#8211; &#8220;morning food&#8221;) <strong>h\u00e1degismatur<\/strong> (lunch &#8211; &#8220;noon food&#8221;) and <strong>kv\u00f6ldmatur<\/strong> (dinner &#8211; &#8220;evening food&#8221;) [<a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.co.uk\/#auto\/is\/breakfast%2C%20lunch%2C%20dinner\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Faroese <strong>morgunmatur<\/strong> means breakfast, lunch or a snack [<a href=\"https:\/\/glosbe.com\/en\/fo\/lunch\">source<\/a>]. Lunch is also <strong>mi\u00f0m\u00e1li<\/strong> [<a href=\"https:\/\/sprotin.fo\/?p=dictionaries&#038;_l=en&#038;_SearchInflections=1&#038;_SearchDescriptions=0&#038;_DictionaryId=3&#038;_DictionaryPage=1&#038;_SearchFor=lunch\">source<\/a>]. Dinner is <strong>d\u00f8gur\u00f0i<\/strong> [\u02c8t\u00f8\u02d0v\u028a\u0279\u026a], which can also mean lunch [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/d%C3%B8gur%C3%B0i\">source<\/a>], or <strong>n\u00e1ttur\u00f0i<\/strong> [\u02c8n\u0254t\u02d0\u02cc\u028a\u0279\u026a] = dinner, supper (main) meal in the evening [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/n%C3%A1ttur%C3%B0i#Faroese\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>What do you call the different meals?<\/p>\n<p>The first meal of the day is breakfast for me, whenever I have it. The meal in the middle of the day I used to call dinner, but now call lunch.
