Is there are linguistic term for such words? <\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples that I wasn&#8217;t aware were, or are, trademarked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Adrenaline<\/strong> &#8211; also known as epinephrine, it is trademarked by Parke-Davis in the USA, but widely used generically elsewhere<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asprin<\/strong> &#8211; a medication used to treat pain, fever, or inflammation made from acetylsalicylic acid. Generic in the USA, but still trademarked by Bayer in many other countries<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dry ice<\/strong> &#8211; a solid form of carbon dioxide formerlly trademarked by the Dry Ice Corporation of America<\/li>\n<li><strong>Escalator<\/strong> &#8211; a moving staircase originally trademarked of Otis Elevator Company<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ping Pong<\/strong> &#8211; table tennis, trademarked by Parker Brothers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plasticine<\/strong> &#8211; modelling clay, trademarked by Flair Leisure Products plc<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tarmac<\/strong> &#8211; still trademarked by Tarmac Ltd, but used generically<\/li>\n<li><strong>trampoline<\/strong> &#8211; originally trademarked by the Griswold-Nissen Trampoline &#038; Tumbling Company<\/li>\n<li><strong>Velcro<\/strong> &#8211; still trademarked by Velcro Companies but used generically<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can you think of other examples? <\/p>\n<p>Or product names that are becoming generic?<\/p>\n<p>Source: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_generic_and_genericized_trademarks\">Wikipedia<\/a>, <a href=http:\/\/robdkelly.com\/blog\/marketing\/top-100-synonymous-genericized-brands\/\">robdkelly.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some words were originally trademarked but have become generic and lost their trademark status.
