Yesterday I say a post<\/a> in the Silly Linguistics Community<\/a> on Facebook challenging people to write a sentence in all the languages they speak. This is what I came up with:<\/p>\n

Tha e duilich writing une phrase ym mhob spr\u00e5k at\u00e1 agam, pero ich \u8a66\u8a66 red ennagh symoil \u3092\u66f8\u304f, kaj nun \u044f \u0445\u043e\u0447\u0443 \u0159\u00edct \u017ee il mio tomo tawa supa est\u00e1 cheio de \u021bipari.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This means “It is difficult writing a sentence in every language I speak, but I will try to write something interesting, and now I want to say my hovercraft is full of eels”.<\/p>\n

The languages, in order, are Scottish Gaelic, English, French, Welsh, Swedish, Irish, Spanish, German, Chinese, Manx, Japanese, Esperanto, Russian, Czech, Italian, Toki Pona, Portuguese and Romanian.<\/p>\n

It’s not the best sentence ever, perhaps, but I enjoyed the challenge of putting it together. It also got me thinking about how many languages and writing systems I could use in a version of my motto “one language is never enough<\/a>“. This motto appears on some versions of my logo, such as the one above, and I usually try to write it in several difficult languages.<\/p>\n

Here are some versions I came up with today. The first version incorporates some of the languages I speak and am learning, plus a few others.<\/p>\n

Une singur\u0103 \u8bed\u8a00 \u00e4r nikdy \u043d\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u043e\u0447\u043d\u043e<\/b> – languages = French, Romanian, Chinese, Swedish, Czech \/ Slovak, Russian.<\/p>\n

Ett seule \u8a00\u8a9e ist nunca yn ddig<\/b>on – languages = Norwegian \/ Swedish, French, Japanese, German, Portuguese \/ Galician \/ Spanish, Welsh.<\/p>\n

Jeden lingua er niemals suficiente<\/b> – languages = Czech \/ Polish \/ Slovak \/ Rusyn, Asturian \/ Chamorro \/ Corsican \/ Galician \/ Italian \/ Latin \/ Sicilian \/ Interlingua, Danish \/ Faroese \/ Icelandic \/ Norwegian, German, Spanish \/ Asturian.<\/p>\n
