{"id":15214,"date":"2018-02-28T14:08:20","date_gmt":"2018-02-28T13:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=15214"},"modified":"2018-02-28T14:08:20","modified_gmt":"2018-02-28T13:08:20","slug":"snow-falls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=15214","title":{"rendered":"Snow falls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As there has been some snow here this week, and it&#8217;s snowing at bit as I write this, I thought I&#8217;d look at some words for snow.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/omniglot\/38707752640\/in\/photostream\/\" title=\"Snow \/ Eira\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4767\/38707752640_83f59234ac_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" alt=\"Snow \/ Eira\"\/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<em>A bit of snow in my garden yesterday morning<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Romanian <strong>snow<\/strong> is <strong>z\u0103pad\u0103<\/strong> [z\u0259\u02c8pad\u0259], which comes from the Slavic word <em>zapadati<\/em> (to fall) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/z%C4%83pad%C4%83\">source<\/a>]. <strong>To snow<\/strong> is <em>a ninge<\/em>, and <strong>snowfall<\/strong> is <em>ninsoare<\/em>, which both come from the Latin <em>ningere<\/em> (to snow), utimately from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*sneyg\u02b7\u02b0-<\/em> (to snow) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/ninge#Romanian\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The English word <strong>snow<\/strong> comes from Middle English <em>snow\/snaw<\/em>, from the Old English <em>sn\u0101w<\/em> (snow), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*snaiwaz<\/em> (snow), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*sn\u00f3yg\u02b7\u02b0os<\/em> (snow), from the root<em> *sneyg\u02b7\u02b0-<\/em> (to snow).<\/p>\n<p>Many of the words for snow in other European languages come from the same Proto-Indo-European root. However, words for snow in Welsh (<em>eira<\/em>), Cornish (<em>ergh<\/em>) and Breton <em>erc\u2019h<\/em>, come from the Proto-Celtic <em>*argyos<\/em> (white), via the Proto-Brythonic <em>*\u0117r\u0263<\/em> (snow) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/eira\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As there has been some snow here this week, and it&#8217;s snowing at bit as I write this, I thought I&#8217;d look at some words for snow.
