{"id":15181,"date":"2018-02-16T12:26:50","date_gmt":"2018-02-16T11:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=15181"},"modified":"2018-02-16T12:26:50","modified_gmt":"2018-02-16T11:26:50","slug":"rememberers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=15181","title":{"rendered":"Rememberers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I discovered a new word today &#8211; <strong>rememberer<\/strong> &#8211; it means one who remembers, and in sociolinguitics it has a more specific meaning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;One who remembers several words and phrases from a moribund language, but never became fluent in it.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I came across this word on Wikipedia in an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Pomo_language\">article<\/a> about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/writing\/southernpomo.htm\">Southern Pomo language<\/a>, which states that &#8220;In 2012 there was one fluent speaker, from Dry Creek, one <strong>rememberer<\/strong>, and a handful of people who learned some vocabulary as children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Does anyone know that the current situation is for Southern Pomo? <\/p>\n<p>The article mentions revival efforts, but I can&#8217;t find anything more recent about the state of the language.<\/p>\n<p>Related words include <strong>rememberancer<\/strong> &#8211; a person who reminds someone, and <strong>reremember<\/strong> &#8211; to remember again.
