They are structures that transport nutrients from the leaves to other parts of plants. <\/p>\n<p>In trees they are the innermost layer of bark, and the word <strong>phloem<\/strong> [\u02c8fl\u0259\u028a.em \/ \u02c8flo\u028a.em] comes from the Greek word <em>\u03c6\u03bb\u03bf\u03b9\u03cc\u03c2<\/em> (phloios), which means bark.
