{"id":14992,"date":"2017-12-30T17:36:47","date_gmt":"2017-12-30T16:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=14992"},"modified":"2017-12-30T17:36:47","modified_gmt":"2017-12-30T16:36:47","slug":"snail-houses-and-creeping-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=14992","title":{"rendered":"Snail houses and creeping things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/snigelhus.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 20px 50px;\" alt=\"Snigelhus\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An interesting Swedish I learnt recently is <strong>snigelhus<\/strong>, which means shell, or literally &#8220;snail house&#8221;. <em>Snigel<\/em> is a snail or slug, and <em>hus<\/em> is house, case or residence. <\/p>\n<p>The word <em>snigel<\/em> comes from the Old Norse <em>snigill<\/em> (snail), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*snagila<\/em> (snail), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*sneg-<\/em> (to crawl, creep; creeping thing), which is also the root of the English words snail and snake.<\/p>\n<p>Some related words include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>snigelfart = snail&#8217;s pace, e.g. att g\u00e5 fram\u00e5t i snigelfart = to proceed at a snail&#8217;s pace<\/li>\n<li>snigelpost = snail mail<\/li>\n<li>snigelaktig = snail-like<\/li>\n<li>snigelg\u00e5ng = snail time<\/li>\n<li>snigeltempo = snail pace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another name for snail is <em>snigel med skal<\/em> (snail with shell), and another name for slug is <em>snigel utan skal<\/em> (snail without shell). <\/p>\n<p>So it seems that <em>skal<\/em> is another word for shell. It also means coat, paring, rind, jacket or peel.
