At first I wasn&#8217;t sure where these words came from, then realised that they are probably abbreviations of automobile.<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish word does in fact come from <em>automobil<\/em>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/bil#Swedish\">Wiktionary<\/a>. The same word is also found in Danish and Norwegian. In Faroese the word for car is simliar: <em>bilur<\/em> [\u02c8pi\u02d0l\u028a\u0279].<\/p>\n<p>The word automobile comes from the French <em>automobile<\/em>, from Ancient Greek <em>\u03b1\u1f50\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/em> (aut\u00f3s &#8211; self) &#038; the French <em>mobile<\/em> (moving), from the Latin <em>mobilis<\/em> (movable).
