I&#8217;m in no hurry, and just want to learn the basics, at least at first, so my lack of progress doesn&#8217;t worry me.<\/p>\n<p>There seem to be quite a few ways to greet people in Icelandic. These include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Hall\u00f3<br \/>\n&#8211; G\u00f3\u00f0an dag(inn) = Good day<br \/>\n&#8211; Komdu s\u00e6ll og blessa\u00f0ur (>m) = &#8220;Come joyful and blesed&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; Komdu s\u00e6l og blessa\u00f0  (>f) = &#8220;Come joyful and blessed&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; Komdu s\u00e6ll (>m), Komdu s\u00e6l (>f)<br \/>\n&#8211; S\u00e6ll (>m), S\u00e6l (>f)<br \/>\n&#8211; S\u00e6ll vertu (>m), S\u00e6l vertu (>f)<br \/>\n&#8211; Blessa\u00f0ur (>m), Blessa\u00f0 (>f)<\/p>\n<p>Goodbyes include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Vertu blessa\u00f0ur (>m), Vertu blessu\u00f0 (>f) = &#8220;Be blessed&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; Vertu s\u00e6ll (>m), Vertu s\u00e6l (>f) = &#8220;Be joyful&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; Bless \u00e1 me\u00f0an = &#8220;Bye as long as&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; Bless bless = Bye bye<br \/>\n&#8211; Bless = Bye<br \/>\n&#8211; Vi\u00f0 sj\u00e1umst = &#8220;We (will) see each other again&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8211; Sj\u00e1umst s\u00ed\u00f0ar = See you later<\/p>\n<p>>m = said to males, >f = said to females<\/p>\n<p>You can hear recordings of some of these on my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/language\/phrases\/icelandic.php\">Icelandic phrases page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Are these all commonly-used?<\/p>\n<p>Do other languages have gender-specific greetings?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have now been learning Icelandic for a couple of weeks, and am still on Lesson 1 in Colloquial Icelandic.
