{"id":14462,"date":"2017-09-01T11:53:29","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T10:53:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=14462"},"modified":"2017-09-01T11:53:29","modified_gmt":"2017-09-01T10:53:29","slug":"filibustering-freebooters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=14462","title":{"rendered":"Filibustering freebooters!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s the connecting between the words filibuster and freebooter?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is, they both come from the same Dutch word <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/vrijbuiter\"><em>vrijbuiter<\/em><\/a> [\u02c8vr\u025bi\u032fb\u0153y\u032ft\u0259r] (plunderer, robber), from <em>vrij<\/em> (free), <em>buit<\/em> (booty) and\u200e <em>-er<\/em> (agent suffix).<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/freebooter\">freebooter<\/a> as originally &#8220;an adventurer who pillages, plunders or wages ad-hoc war on other nations&#8221;, and apparently also means &#8220;one who rehosts online media without authorization&#8221;. It is a calque translation from Dutch, and was first recorded in English in the 1560s [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?term=freebooter\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/filibuster#English\">filibuster<\/a> originally meant &#8220;a mercenary soldier; specifically, a mercenary who travelled illegally in an organized group from the United States to a country in Central America or the Spanish West Indies in the mid-19th century seeking economic and political benefits through armed force&#8221;. Over time it also came to mean, &#8220;A tactic (such as giving long, often irrelevant speeches) employed to delay the proceedings of, or the making of a decision by, a legislative body, particularly the United States Senate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?term=freebooter\">Filibuster<\/a> was first recorded in English in the 1580s as <em>flibutor<\/em>. It was borrowed from the Spanish <em>filibustero<\/em> (pirate), from French <em>flibustier<\/em> (pirate), from the Dutch <em>vrijbuiter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I discovered this from Bill Bryson&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1784161861\/omniglot-20\"><em>Made In America: An Informal History of American English<\/em><\/a>, which I&#8217;m reading at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Filibustering freebooters! sounds like the kind of curse <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tintinologist.org\/guides\/lists\/curses.html\">Captain Haddock<\/a> uses in the Tintin stories. He does in fact say Filibuster(s)! and Fancy-dress freebooter!, but not Filibustering freebooters!, as far as I can discover.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s the connecting between the words filibuster and freebooter?
