I&#8217;ve learnt a lot of interesting and beautiful Gaelic songs this week, and had a great time. There were some excellent concerts in the evenings, and an end-of-course c\u00e8ilidh last night, at which each class performed their party piece (a song or two), then there was music, dancing and more singing.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the course was songs related to the sea. From the Old Irish <em>muir<\/em> (sea), from the Proto-Celtic <em>*mori<\/em> (sea), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*m\u00f3ri<\/em> (sea).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>cuan<\/strong> [ku\u0259n] = ocean; bay, inlet; haven. From the Old Irish <em>c\u00faan<\/em> (bay, gulf, harbor), from Proto-Indo-European <em>*kapno-<\/em>, from <em>*keh\u2082p-<\/em> (to grasp).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>fairge<\/strong> [far\u02b2ag\u02b2\u0259] = sea, ocean; (sea) swell, turbulence of the ocean. From the Old Irish <em>fairrge<\/em> (sea, ocean).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>s\u00e0l<\/strong> [sa\u02d0l\u032a\u02e0] = the sea; salt water, seawater. From the Old Irish <em>s\u00e1l<\/em> (brine, sea water).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>air s\u00e0l<\/strong> = at sea<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>muireil<\/strong> = naval, maritime; like a sea<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>loingeach<\/strong> [l\u032a\u02e0\u0254i\u014b\u02b2g\u02b2\u0259x] = nautical<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/birlinn.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"601\" alt=\"A model of a birlinn, a type of boat used on the west coast of Scotland from the middle ages\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are also quite a few words in Scottish Gaelic for boats:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>b\u00e0ta<\/strong> [ba\u02d0\u02b0d\u0259] = boat, craft. From the Old Irish <em>b\u00e1t<\/em>, from Old English <em>b\u0101t<\/em> (boat), from the Proto-Germanic <em>*baitaz, *bait\u0105<\/em> (boat, small ship), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*b\u02b0eyd-<\/em> (to break, split).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>long<\/strong> [l\u032a\u02e0\u0254u\u014bg] = ship. From the Latin <em>(navis) longa<\/em> (long ship).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>sgoth<\/strong> [sg\u0254h] = boat, skiff, large winter fishing-boat, yacht<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>curach<\/strong> [kur\u0259x] = coracle, curragh. From the Middle Irish <em>curach<\/em>, from the Proto-Celtic <em>*korukos<\/em> (leather boat), probably from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*(s)koro-<\/em> (leather).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>coit<\/strong> [k\u0254hd\u02b2] = small fishing boat, canoe; cat (cargo boat)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>ge\u00f2lag<\/strong> [g\u02b2\u0254\u02d0l\u032a\u02e0ag] = small boat or yawl<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Birlinn\"><strong>b\u00ecrlinn<\/strong><\/a> [bi\u02d0r\u032al\u032a\u02b2\u026an\u032a\u02b2] = galley, rowing barge. From the Old Norse <em>byr\u00f0ingr<\/em> (&#8220;ship of burden&#8221; = cargo ship, merchant vessel).
