{"id":14276,"date":"2017-07-28T08:03:51","date_gmt":"2017-07-28T07:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=14276"},"modified":"2017-07-28T08:03:51","modified_gmt":"2017-07-28T07:03:51","slug":"difficult-irish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=14276","title":{"rendered":"Difficult Irish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following on from my last post, I decided to look at words for difficult, and related words, in Irish today.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of different words for difficult in Irish:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>deacair<\/strong> = hard, difficult; difficulty; hardship, distress; (<em>used in Connacht<\/em>)<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>doiligh<\/strong> = hard, difficult; hard to bear, distressing; hard to deal with; difficult, intractable (<em>used in Ulster and Munster<\/em>)<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>crua<\/strong> = hard; Firm, solid; difficult; strenuous; tight; forceful; severe; harsh, unfeeling; stingy; hardy<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>dian<\/strong> =  intense, vehement; hard, severe<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>duaisi\u00fail<\/strong> = laborious, difficult, troublesome, distressing<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>d\u00fashl\u00e1nach<\/strong> = challenging<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>casta<\/strong> = twisted, wound; complicated, intricate, involved; gnarled, bent; wizened<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>ciotach<\/strong> = left-handed; Awkward, unhandy; difficult, troublesome; inconvenient<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of usage:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Is deacair ceann cr\u00edonna a chur ar cholainn \u00f3g = You can\u2019t put an old head on young shoulders<br \/>\n&#8211; Is deacair a bheith suas leis = He is a very tricky person to deal with<br \/>\n&#8211; Is doiligh ciall a bhaint as = It is hard to make sense of it<br \/>\n&#8211; Is doiligh corr\u00e1n maith a fh\u00e1il do dhrochbhuana\u00ed = A bad workman quarrels with his tools (It is hard to get a good sickle from a bad reaper)<br \/>\n&#8211; Ceist chrua = A difficult question<br \/>\n&#8211; Fadhb chrua le r\u00e9iteach = A difficult problem to solve<br \/>\n&#8211; Bh\u00ed saol crua aici = She had a hard life<br \/>\n&#8211; T\u00e1 m\u00e9 ag staid\u00e9ar go dian = I am studying hard<br \/>\n&#8211; T\u00e1 t\u00fa m\u00f3s dian air, = You are a bit too hard on him<br \/>\n&#8211; Obair dhuaisi\u00fail = Tedious, wearing, work<br \/>\n&#8211; Aistear duaisi\u00fail = Weary\/wearying journey<br \/>\n&#8211; Sc\u00e9al casta = Complicated story<br \/>\n= Ceist chasta = Knotty question<\/p>\n<p>In Scottish Gaelic words for difficult include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>doirbh<\/strong> [d\u0264r\u02b2\u0264v] = difficult, hard; tricky<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>bruaill<\/strong> [bru\u0259l\u032a\u02b2] = difficult; intractable<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>duilich<\/strong> [dul\u026a\u00e7] = sorry; difficult, hard; regrettable; sad<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>doilidh<\/strong> [d\u0254l\u026a] = sorry; difficult, hard; regrettable; sad<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>deacrach<\/strong> [d\u02b2axgr\u0259x] = difficult, hard; mournful, sad<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>cruaidh<\/strong> [kru\u0259j = hard, firm; difficult; painful, distressing; scarce<\/p>\n<p>In Manx words for difficult include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>doillee<\/strong> = difficult, hard, stiff, ticklish, uphill<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>doccaragh<\/strong> = arduous, grievous, hard, inconvenient, laborious, painful, uphill<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>condragh<\/strong> = difficult, mischievous, wicked<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>creoi<\/strong> = adamant, difficult, distressing, hardy, heartless, obdurate, severe, stubborn<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>neuaashagh<\/strong> = awkward, difficult; discontented, restless, uneasy<\/p>\n<p><em>Sources: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.focloir.ie\/\">focl\u00f3ir.ie<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teanglann.ie\/\">teanglann.ie<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faclair.com\/\">Am Faclair Beag<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionaryq.com\/gaelg\/\">Fockleyreen<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following on from my last post, I decided to look at words for difficult, and related words, in Irish today.
