I also like the sound of it, so thought I&#8217;d write about it.<\/p>\n<p>A calaboose is an informal American term for a prison or jail. It comes from the Spanish <em>calabozo<\/em> (dungeon), according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/dictionary\/english\/calaboose\">Collins English Dictionary<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Calabozo<\/strong> possibly comes from the Late Latin <em>*calafodium<\/em>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/fodio#Latin\"><em>fodi\u014d<\/em><\/a> (I dig, bury), which comes from the Proto-Indo-European <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Appendix:List_of_Proto-Indo-European_roots\/b%CA%B0\"><em>*b\u02b0od-<\/em><\/a> (plot, patch of ground) from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Appendix:List_of_Proto-Indo-European_roots\/b%CA%B0\"><em>*b\u02b0ed\u02b0-<\/em><\/a> (to pierce, dig). <\/p>\n<p>This is also the root of the English word <em>bed<\/em>, via the Proto-Germanic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/Reconstruction:Proto-Germanic\/badj%C4%85\"><em>badj\u0105<\/em><\/a> (lair, grave, bed), the Welsh word <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/bedd#Welsh\"><em>bedd<\/em><\/a> (grave), via the Proto-Celtic <em>*bedo-<\/em> (grave, ditch), and related words in other, mainly Germanic, languages.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I came across the word calaboose in a book I read recently and as I couldn&#8217;t work out its meaning from the context I had to look it up.
