{"id":13227,"date":"2016-11-29T13:28:11","date_gmt":"2016-11-29T12:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=13227"},"modified":"2016-11-29T13:28:11","modified_gmt":"2016-11-29T12:28:11","slug":"scratching-cartoons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=13227","title":{"rendered":"Scratching cartoons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/scratch.gif\" width=\"208\" height=\"208\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 20px 50px;\" alt=\"Cartoon cat scratching\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first <strong>cartoons<\/strong>, in the sense of humorous or satirical drawings, appeared in the magazine Punch in 1843, however the word was used from the 1670s to mean &#8220;a drawing on strong paper (used as a model for another work)&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Cartoon can also mean:<\/p>\n<p> &#8211; An artist&#8217;s preliminary sketch.<br \/>\n &#8211; An animated film<br \/>\n &#8211; A diagram in a scientific concept.<\/p>\n<p>Cartoon comes from French <em>carton<\/em> (cardboard, carton, cardboard box, target, sketch; cartoon, inset map, card), from the Italian <em>cartone<\/em><em> (cardboard, paperboard, a carton, a box, a cartoon (an artist&#8217;s preliminary sketch or an animated cartoon)), from the Latin <\/em><em>charta<\/em> (paper, map, menu), from the Ancient Greek <em>\u03c7\u03ac\u03c1\u03c4\u03b7\u03c2<\/em> \u200e(kh\u00e1rt\u0113s &#8211; papyrus, paper), from <em>\u03c7\u03b1\u03c1\u03ac\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9<\/em> \u200e(khar\u00e1ss\u014d &#8211; I scratch, inscribe), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*\u01f5\u02b0er-<\/em> \u200e(to scratch).<\/p>\n<p>A series of cartoons is known as a comic strip or strip cartoon, and the section of a newspaper containing cartoons and comic strips is apparently known as the funnies, the funny papers or the funny papers, at least in some English-speaking countries &#8211; I wouldn&#8217;t use these words, and might call it the cartoon section.
