{"id":13166,"date":"2016-11-16T18:29:27","date_gmt":"2016-11-16T17:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=13166"},"modified":"2016-11-16T18:29:27","modified_gmt":"2016-11-16T17:29:27","slug":"bants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=13166","title":{"rendered":"Bants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I came across word that&#8217;s new to me &#8211; <strong>bants<\/strong> &#8211; which, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/bants\">Oxford Dictionaries<\/a>, means:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Playfully teasing or mocking remarks exchanged with another person or group; banter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s also written bantz, and is an abbreviation of <strong>banter<\/strong>, a word of unknown origin which first appeared in writing in 1676 in a play by Thomas D\u2019Urfey called <em>Madam Fickle<\/em>, and is thought to come from London street slang.<\/p>\n<p>Banter has a number of meanings:<\/p>\n<p>1. To engage in banter or playful conversation.<br \/>\n2. To play or do something amusing.<br \/>\n3. To tease (someone) mildly.<br \/>\n4. To joke about; to ridicule (a trait, habit, etc.).<br \/>\n5. To delude or trick; to play a prank upon.<br \/>\n6.
