It has a number of meanings:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1. <strong>trump<\/strong> (<em>noun<\/em>): the suit, in a game of cards, that outranks all others; a playing card of that suit; something that gives one an advantage, especially one held in reserve.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Etymology<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom triumph, from the French <em>triomphe<\/em> \u200e(triumph), from the Latin <em>triumphus<\/em> (triumph, victory), via the Etruscan <em>triumpus<\/em> from the Ancient Greek <em>\u03b8\u03c1\u03af\u03b1\u03bc\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2<\/em> \u200e(thr\u00edambos &#8211; a hymn to Dionysos).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>2. <strong>trump<\/strong> (<em>verb<\/em>): to fabricate, devise.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Etymology<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom trump (to deceive, cheat), from the Middle English <em>trumpen<\/em>, from the Old French <em>tromper<\/em> (to deceive). Of uncertain origin.
