When I first saw it I guessed that it meant celibate, but when I checked in a <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reverso.net\/french-english\/c%C3%A9libataire\">dictionary<\/a> I found that while it does mean celibate, it is more commonly used to mean single. So <em>un c\u00e9libataire<\/em> is a single man or bachelor, and <em>une c\u00e9libataire<\/em> is a single woman or spinster. A confirmed bachelor <em>un c\u00e9libataire endurci<\/em> and <em>une m\u00e8re c\u00e9libataire <\/em>is a single \/ unmarried mother &#8211; the male equivalent is <em>un p\u00e8re c\u00e9libataire<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>C\u00e9libataire<\/em> comes from <em>c\u00e9libat<\/em> (celibacy), from the Latin <em>caelebs<\/em> (unmarried, single), from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*kaiwelo-<\/em> \u200e(alone) and <em>*lib\u02b0s<\/em>&#8211; \u200e(living) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/c%C3%A9libat#French\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Single comes from the Middle English <em>sengle<\/em>, from the Old French <em>sengle<\/em>, from Latin <em>singulus<\/em>, a diminutive of <em>simplex<\/em> (simple or literally &#8220;onefold&#8221;*, from <em>sim-<\/em> \u200e(the same) and <em>plicare<\/em> \u200e(to fold) [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/single#Etymology\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>*Duplex = twofold, double<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I learnt an interesting new French word today &#8211; c\u00e9libataire.
