This is the Gaelic equivalent of &#8220;There&#8217;s a frog in my throat&#8221;, which is used when you are rendered temporarily speechless due to a small amphibian taking up residence in your oesophagus, or when you have a sore throat. Fortunately I don&#8217;t have one now, but I did have one just before I went to Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>In Irish you might say:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>t\u00e1 sceach i mo scornach<\/em> = there&#8217;s a hawthorn \/ thornbush in my throat<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>t\u00e1 piach\u00e1n i mo sceadam\u00e1n<\/em> = there&#8217;s a pain in my throat<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>t\u00e1 ciach orm<\/em> = there&#8217;s a hoarseness on me<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>t\u00e1 sl\u00f3cht orm<\/em> = there&#8217;s a hoarseness, throatiness on me<br \/>\n&#8211; <em>t\u00e1 sceadam\u00e1n \/ scornach nimhneach orm<\/em> = I have a sore throat <\/p>\n<p><em>Sources: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.focloir.ie\/en\/dictionary\/ei\/throat\">focl\u00f3ir.ie<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teanglann.ie\/en\/fgb\/ciach\">Focl\u00f3ir Gaeilge-B\u00e9arla \u00d3 Donaill<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In Manx you might say: <em>ta cred orrym<\/em> = there&#8217;s a grunt \/ cough \/ roughness \/ tickle on me [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mannin.info\/Mannin\/fockleyr\/e2m.php\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>The equivalent is Welsh is <em>Dw i&#8217;n gryg\/gryglyd\/crygu<\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/geiriaduracademi.org\/\">source<\/a>] &#8211; <em>gryg<\/em> and<em> gryglyd<\/em> come from <em>cryg<\/em>, which means &#8220;hoarse, harsh, raucous&#8221;, and <em>crygu<\/em> means &#8220;to grow\/make hoarse; to stammer&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/geiriadur.ac.uk\/gpc\/gpc.html\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Are there equivalent idioms in other languages?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One Scottish Gaelic expression I learnt last week was &#8220;Tha craobh air mo sg\u00f2rnan&#8221; or literally &#8220;There&#8217;s a tree on my throat&#8221;.
