One Scottish Gaelic expression I learnt last week was “Tha craobh air mo sg\u00f2rnan<\/em>” or literally “There’s a tree on my throat”. This is the Gaelic equivalent of “There’s a frog in my throat”, which is used when you are rendered temporarily speechless due to a small amphibian taking up residence in your oesophagus, or when you have a sore throat. Fortunately I don’t have one now, but I did have one just before I went to Scotland.<\/p>\n

In Irish you might say:<\/p>\n

– t\u00e1 sceach i mo scornach<\/em> = there’s a hawthorn \/ thornbush in my throat
\n– t\u00e1 piach\u00e1n i mo sceadam\u00e1n<\/em> = there’s a pain in my throat
\n– t\u00e1 ciach orm<\/em> = there’s a hoarseness on me
\n– t\u00e1 sl\u00f3cht orm<\/em> = there’s a hoarseness, throatiness on me
\n– t\u00e1 sceadam\u00e1n \/ scornach nimhneach orm<\/em> = I have a sore throat <\/p>\n

In Manx you might say: ta cred orrym<\/em> = there’s a grunt \/ cough \/ roughness \/ tickle on me [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n

The equivalent is Welsh is Dw i’n gryg\/gryglyd\/crygu<\/em> [source<\/a>] – gryg<\/em> and gryglyd<\/em> come from cryg<\/em>, which means “hoarse, harsh, raucous”, and crygu<\/em> means “to grow\/make hoarse; to stammer” [source<\/a>].<\/p>\n
