{"id":12127,"date":"2016-03-02T11:50:54","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T11:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=12127"},"modified":"2016-03-02T11:50:54","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T11:50:54","slug":"llongrats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=12127","title":{"rendered":"Llongrats!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the comments on an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/booksblog\/2016\/mar\/01\/welsh-language-literature-tells-a-local-but-universal-story\">article about Welsh literature<\/a> I read today, I came across the word <strong>llongrats!<\/strong>, which appears to be a Welsh-English hybrid combining the Welsh word <em>llongyfarchiadau<\/em> and it&#8217;s English equivalent, congratulations.<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s common for bilingual people to switch languages, often in mid-sentence, this is the first example I&#8217;ve seen of a mid-word switch in Welsh\/English. <\/p>\n<p>Have you come across anything like this?<\/p>\n<p>Actually, when I come to think about it some words in English do have bilingual roots, particularly those borrowed from Latin and Greek, such as television, from the Greek <em>\u03c4\u1fc6\u03bb\u03b5<\/em> \u200e(t\u00eale &#8211; at a distance, far off\/away\/from) and from the Latin <em>v\u012bsi\u014d<\/em> \u200e(vision, seeing), via Anglo-Norman and Old French.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the comments on an article about Welsh literature I read today, I came across the word llongrats!, which appears to be a Welsh-English hybrid combining the Welsh word llongyfarchiadau and it&#8217;s English equivalent, congratulations.
