{"id":12024,"date":"2016-01-19T15:45:54","date_gmt":"2016-01-19T15:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=12024"},"modified":"2016-01-19T15:45:54","modified_gmt":"2016-01-19T15:45:54","slug":"dystopias-and-utopias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=12024","title":{"rendered":"Dystopias and Utopias"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Why is it that so many films and novels set in the future are dystopian?<\/p>\n<p>I thought about this after watching <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Hunger_Games\"><em>The Hunger Games<\/em><\/a> last night, and tried to think of any stories of utopian futures. The only films I could think featuring non-dystopian futures of were <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Back_to_the_Future_Part_II\"><em>Back to the Future II<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bicentennial_Man_(film)\"><em>Bicentennial Man<\/em><\/a>. Can you think of any others?<\/p>\n<p>The word <strong>dystopia<\/strong> combines the Ancient Greek <em>\u03b4\u03c5\u03c3<\/em> (dus &#8211; bad), and <em>\u03c4\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/em> \u200e(t\u00f3pos &#8211; place, region) with the Latin\/Ancient Greek suffix  <em>ia\/\u03af\u03b1<\/em> \u200e(-\u00eda). It was derived from the word <strong>utopia<\/strong>, which was coined by Thomas More for his 1516 book <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Utopia\"><em>Utopia<\/em><\/a>. The u part of utopia comes from the Greek <em>ou<\/em> (\u03bf\u1f50 &#8211; not) and by the 17th century was used to refer to a place or society that was considered perfect or ideal. The prefix <em>ou<\/em> possibly got confused with <em>\u03b5\u1f56<\/em> \u200e(e\u00fb, &#8211; well, good). Dystopia was first used by J. S. Mill in a parliamentary speech in 1868 [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dystopia\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why is it that so many films and novels set in the future are dystopian?
