Why is it that so many films and novels set in the future are dystopian?<\/p>\n
I thought about this after watching The Hunger Games<\/em><\/a> last night, and tried to think of any stories of utopian futures. The only films I could think featuring non-dystopian futures of were Back to the Future II<\/em><\/a> and Bicentennial Man<\/em><\/a>. Can you think of any others?<\/p>\n The word dystopia<\/strong> combines the Ancient Greek \u03b4\u03c5\u03c3<\/em> (dus – bad), and \u03c4\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2<\/em> \u200e(t\u00f3pos – place, region) with the Latin\/Ancient Greek suffix ia\/\u03af\u03b1<\/em> \u200e(-\u00eda). It was derived from the word utopia<\/strong>, which was coined by Thomas More for his 1516 book Utopia<\/em><\/a>. The u part of utopia comes from the Greek ou<\/em> (\u03bf\u1f50 – not) and by the 17th century was used to refer to a place or society that was considered perfect or ideal. The prefix ou<\/em> possibly got confused with \u03b5\u1f56<\/em> \u200e(e\u00fb, – well, good). Dystopia was first used by J. S.
