Apparently, &#8220;People don&#8217;t know, and school teachers don&#8217;t care! obviously; leaving me to inform: The name &#8216;Mandarin&#8217; has been obsolete 105 years now.&#8221; The name Mandarin was used for a &#8216;Manchurian high official&#8217; who spoke \u5b98\u8a71 (official speech). However since the fall of the Manchurian Qing monarchy in 1911, &#8220;Mandarins dead as dodos&#8221; and to use the name Mandarin is &#8220;an affront to the republican nation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This language in fact has a number of different names in different countries and regions:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; \u666e\u901a\u8bdd [\u666e\u901a\u8a71] (p\u01d4t\u014dnghu\u00e0) &#8211; &#8220;common speech&#8221; &#8211; in China<br \/>\n&#8211; \u570b\u8a9e (gu\u00f3y\u01d4) &#8211; &#8220;national language&#8221; &#8211; in Taiwan<br \/>\n&#8211; \u534e\u8bed [\u83ef\u8a9e] (hu\u00e1y\u01d4) &#8211; &#8220;Chinese language&#8221; &#8211;  in the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and the other parts of Southeast Asia.<br \/>\n&#8211; \u6c49\u8bed [\u6f22\u8a9e] (h\u00e0ny\u01d4) &#8211; &#8220;Han language&#8221; &#8211; in the USA and among the Chinese diaspora<br \/>\n&#8211; \u4e2d\u6587 (zh\u014dngw\u00e9n) &#8211; &#8220;Chinese language&#8221; &#8211; in Taiwan, mainly<br \/>\n&#8211; Chinese, Mandarin, Mandarin Chinese, Putonghua, etc. in English-speaking countries<br \/>\n&#8211; Other names in other countries and languages<\/p>\n<p>During the Ming (1368\u20131644) and Qing (1644\u20131912) dynasties, the language used by court officials became known as \u5b98\u8bdd [\u5b98\u8a71] (gu\u0101nhu\u00e0) &#8211; &#8220;official speech&#8221;. The word Mandarin comes from the the Sanskrit \u092e\u0928\u094d\u0924\u094d\u0930\u093f\u0928\u094d (mantrin = counselor, minister) via the Portuguese <em>mandarim<\/em>.
