{"id":11810,"date":"2015-10-31T12:44:21","date_gmt":"2015-10-31T11:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=11810"},"modified":"2015-10-31T12:44:21","modified_gmt":"2015-10-31T11:44:21","slug":"wysinnwyg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=11810","title":{"rendered":"Wysinnwyg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day I listened to a programme on BBC Radio 4 with an unusual title &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b06j6667\"><strong>Wysinnwyg<\/strong><\/a>. When I first saw the title of immediately thought it was a Welsh word, although not one I&#8217;d come across before, and I tried to work out what it might mean. I couldn&#8217;t find it in any Welsh dictionary, so assumed it was a made-up word. After listening to the programme I realised it was a variation on <strong>wysiwyg<\/strong> (what you see is what you get), which also looks Welsh, and means &#8220;what you see is not necessarily what you get&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>There aren&#8217;t very many Welsh words that start with w, in fact, and many of them are loanwords from English. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; waldio [\u02c8\u028aald\u026a\u0254] = to beat, to thrash<br \/>\n&#8211; wb [\u028ab] \/ wbwb [\u02c8\u028ab\u028ab] = wi! oh! alas!<br \/>\n&#8211; wedi[\u02c8\u028a\u025bd\u026a] = after<br \/>\n&#8211; wedyn [\u02c8\u028a\u025bd\u0268n] = afterwards<br \/>\n&#8211; weithiau [\u02c8\u028a\u025b\u026a\u03b8\u026aa\u0268] = sometimes<br \/>\n&#8211; wele [\u02c8\u028a\u025bl\u025b] = behold!<br \/>\n&#8211; wfft [\u028aft] = fie! for shame!<br \/>\n&#8211; wfftian [\u02c8\u028aft\u026aan] = to flout<br \/>\n&#8211; wit-wat [\u02c8\u028a\u026at\u028aat] = fickle<br \/>\n&#8211; wtio [\u02c8\u028at\u026a\u0254] = to boo<br \/>\n&#8211; wrth [\u028ar\u03b8] = by, with, to, compared with, because<br \/>\n&#8211; wy [\u028a\u0268] = egg<br \/>\n&#8211; wyneb [\u02c8\u028a\u0268n\u025bb] = face, surface<br \/>\n&#8211; wyth [\u028a\u0268\u03b8]  = eight<br \/>\n&#8211; wythnos [\u02c8\u028a\u0268\u03b8n\u0254s] = week (eight-night)<\/p>\n<p>Do you ever see acronyms or made-up words and think they are from a particular language? Or see words in one language and think they&#8217;re really from another language?<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I see words with w&#8217;s and y&#8217;s and double l&#8217;s I think of Welsh.
