{"id":11459,"date":"2015-07-14T16:43:20","date_gmt":"2015-07-14T15:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=11459"},"modified":"2015-07-14T16:43:20","modified_gmt":"2015-07-14T15:43:20","slug":"schiehallion-constant-storm-mountain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=11459","title":{"rendered":"Schiehallion &#8211; Constant Storm Mountain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/schiehallion.jpg\" width=\"208\" height=\"208\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 20px 50px;\" alt=\"A photo of Schiehallion\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m currently reading a fascinating book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1847082548\/omniglot-20\"><em>Map of a Nation: A Biography of the Ordnance Survey<\/em><\/a> by Rachel Hewitt, and came across an interesting mountain name &#8211; <strong>Schehallion<\/strong> &#8211; which the author says that she was told means &#8220;constant storm&#8221; in Gaelic, a suitable name as the weather on the mountain is apparently notoriously bad. I thought this unlikely, but couldn&#8217;t work out the original Gaelic name from the anglicised version, so I thought I&#8217;d investigate.<\/p>\n<p>The mountain in questions is known as <em>Schiehallion<\/em> or <em>The Maiden&#8217;s Pap<\/em> in English, and the Gaelic name is <em>S\u00ecth Chailleann<\/em> \/\u0283i&#8217;xal\u032a\u02e0\u02b2\u0259n\u032a\u02e0\/. <em>S\u00ecth<\/em> means hill or mount, and also fairy, and <em>Cailleann<\/em> is the Gaelic form of Caledonia, which was the Latin name for what is now Scotland. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schiehallion\">Wikipedia<\/a> says that the name can be translated as &#8220;&#8221;fairy hill of the Caledonians&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m currently reading a fascinating book, Map of a Nation: A Biography of the Ordnance Survey by Rachel Hewitt, and came across an interesting mountain name &#8211; Schehallion &#8211; which the author says that she was told means &#8220;constant storm&#8221; in Gaelic, a suitable name as the weather on the mountain is apparently notoriously bad.
