{"id":11003,"date":"2015-03-11T17:56:05","date_gmt":"2015-03-11T17:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=11003"},"modified":"2015-03-11T17:56:05","modified_gmt":"2015-03-11T17:56:05","slug":"vellichor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=11003","title":{"rendered":"Vellichor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I came across a number of interesting words today on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/danieldalton\/bob-ombinate?bftw&#038;utm_term=4ldqpgm#.erLBkBDjyo\">BuzzFeed<\/a>, including <strong>vellichor<\/strong>, the strange wistfulness of used bookshops, and <strong>limerence<\/strong>, the state of being infatuated with another person.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dictionaryofobscuresorrows.com\/post\/57250260260\/vellichor\">Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows<\/a> defines vellichor as:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>n.<\/em> the strange wistfulness of used bookstores, which are somehow infused with the passage of time\u2014filled with thousands of old books you\u2019ll never have time to read, each of which is itself locked in its own era, bound and dated and papered over like an old room the author abandoned years ago, a hidden annex littered with thoughts left just as they were on the day they were captured.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I suspect it might be a made-up word, but it&#8217;s a good one.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Limerence\">Wikipedia<\/a>, Limerence is: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; an involuntary state of mind which results from a romantic attraction to another person combined with an overwhelming, obsessive need to have one&#8217;s feelings reciprocated. Psychologist Dorothy Tennov coined the term &#8220;limerence&#8221; for her 1979 book <em>Love and Limerence: The Experience of Being in Love<\/em> to describe the concept that had grown out of her work in the mid-1960s, when she interviewed over 500 people on the topic of love.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So it&#8217;s a genuine word, though not one I&#8217;ve come across before.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I came across a number of interesting words today on BuzzFeed, including vellichor, the strange wistfulness of used bookshops, and limerence, the state of being infatuated with another person.
