{"id":10619,"date":"2014-11-04T19:22:02","date_gmt":"2014-11-04T18:22:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=10619"},"modified":"2014-11-04T19:22:02","modified_gmt":"2014-11-04T18:22:02","slug":"skeuomorphs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=10619","title":{"rendered":"Skeuomorphs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/skeuomorphs.gif\" width=\"171\" height=\"216\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;\" alt=\"Some skeuomorphs\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I came across an interesting word and concept today &#8211; the <strong>skeuomorph<\/strong> [\u02c8skju\u02d0\u0259m\u0254rf], from the Greek <em>\u03c3\u03ba\u03b5\u1fe6\u03bf\u03c2<\/em> (sk\u00e9uos &#8211; container or tool), and <em>\u03bc\u03bf\u03c1\u03c6\u03ae<\/em> (morph\u1e17 &#8211; shape), and defined as &#8220;a derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that were necessary in the original&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skeuomorph\">source<\/a>]. <\/p>\n<p>This term was apparently coined by H. Colley March in 1889 after he noticed that some ancient artifacts had a retro look.
