The normal Welsh word for shop is siop, which sounds like shop. I had wondered if there was a another word for shop other than the one borrowed from English, now I know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maeldy<\/strong> comes from <em>mael<\/em> (gain, profit) and <em>t\u0177<\/em> (house). Other old words for shop are <em>maelfa<\/em>, which combines <em>mael<\/em> and <em>ma<\/em> (place, spot, plain), and <em>masnachdy<\/em> &#8211; masnach = trade, commerce.<\/p>\n<p>Related words include:<br \/>\n&#8211; maeler = trader [masnachwr]<br \/>\n&#8211; maelera; maeliera; maelio = to trade; to profit [masnachu]<br \/>\n&#8211; maeleriaeth = trade; commerce [masnach]<br \/>\n&#8211; maelged = tribute; tax [rhodd; treth]<br \/>\n&#8211; maeliant = gain [lles; elw]<br \/>\n&#8211; maelier = merchant [marsiand\u00efwr]<br \/>\n&#8211; maelwr = shop-keeper; trader [siopwr; masnachwr]<\/p>\n<p>These are all archaic and I don&#8217;t think they&#8217;re used any more.
