These words all come from the Proto-Indo-European root <em>*lend\u02b0-<\/em> (land, heath) [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/lann\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Another word church-related word that is used mainly in Irish and Scottish place names is kil(l), as in Kildare (<em>Cill Dara<\/em>), Kilkenny (<em>Cill Chainnigh<\/em>) and Kilmarnock (<em>Cill Mhe\u00e0rnaig<\/em>). It means church or graveyard and comes from the Irish <em>cill<\/em> (cell (of a hermit), church, burial place), from the Old Irish <em>cell<\/em> (church), from the Latin <em>cella<\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/cell#Old_Irish\">source<\/a>] (a small room, a hut, barn, granary; altar, sanctuary, shrine, pantry), which comes from the Proto-Indo-European <em>*\u1e31eln\u0101<\/em>, which is made up of <em>*\u1e31el-<\/em> (to cover) and a suffix <em>-n\u0101<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The Welsh word <em>cell<\/em> (cell); the Scottish Gaelic <em>cill<\/em> (chapel, church yard, hermit&#8217;s cell); the Manx <em>keeill<\/em> (church, cell); and the Breton <em>kell<\/em> (cell) all come from the same root.<\/p>\n<p>The more commonly-used words for church in the Celtic languages are: <em>eglwys<\/em> (Welsh), <em>eaglais<\/em> (Irish and Scottish Gaelic), <em>eglos<\/em> (Cornish), <em>iliz<\/em> (Breton) and <em>agglish<\/em> (Manx).
