{"id":10188,"date":"2014-07-11T11:52:56","date_gmt":"2014-07-11T11:52:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/blog\/?p=10188"},"modified":"2014-07-11T11:52:56","modified_gmt":"2014-07-11T11:52:56","slug":"coup-de-glotte-and-other-coups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/bloggle\/?p=10188","title":{"rendered":"Les coups de glotte and other coups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/images\/blog\/glottalstop.gif\" width=\"79\" height=\"133\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 20px;\" alt=\"Coup de glotte \/ Glottal Stop\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I discovered that the French for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glottal_stop\">glottal stop<\/a> is <em>coup de glotte<\/em> (&#8220;blow of the glottis&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>The word <em>coup<\/em> (blow, shot, stroke, wave, kick, punch, move) appears in many other expressions, including:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; (donner un) coup de balai = (to) sweep; shake up<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de vent = blow of wind<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de t\u00eate = header; whim<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de tabac = squall; gale<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de pied = kick<br \/>\n&#8211; c&#8217;est le coup de barre ! = it&#8217;s daylight robbery!<br \/>\n&#8211; j&#8217;ai le coup de barre ! = all of a sudden I feel totally shattered!<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de bol = stroke of luck (<em>bol<\/em> = bowl)<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de boule = headbutt<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de brosse = brushstroke<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de th\u00e9\u00e2tre = dramatic turn of events<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de cafard = fit of the blues (<em>cafard<\/em> = cockroach)<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de chapeau = pat on the back (<em>fig<\/em>)<br \/>\n&#8211; donner un coup de chapeau \u00e0 qn\/qch = to give sb\/sth full marks; to praise sb\/sth<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de chapeau \u00e0 X ! = hats off to X!<br \/>\n&#8211; coup d&#8217;\u00e9tat = coup (d&#8217;\u00c9tat); putsch<br \/>\n&#8211; coup de gr\u00e2ce = coup de grace; deathblow<br \/>\n&#8211; (pousser un) coup de gueule = (to have a) rant<\/p>\n<p><em>Gueule<\/em> is another interesting word that came up in the French conversation group yesterday and which means the mouth\/snout\/muzzle of an animal, and is used as a slang word for a person&#8217;s mouth &#8211; the equivalent of mug, gob, cakehole, etc in English. Do you have any others?<\/p>\n<p>One quite rude way to tell people to be quiet in French is &#8220;Ta gueule !&#8221;, and if you drink a lot of alcohol you might wake up the following morning with <em>une gueule de bois<\/em> (&#8220;a wooden gob&#8221;) or a hangover. A <em>gueule-de-loup<\/em> (&#8220;wolf&#8217;s snout&#8221;), on the other hand, is a snapdragon (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snapdragon\"><em>Antirrhinum<\/em><\/a>), which is a <em>trwyn llo<\/em> (&#8220;cow&#8217;s nose&#8221;) or a <em>safn y llew<\/em> (&#8220;lion&#8217;s mouth&#8221;) in Welsh.
