I guessed that <em>Novi<\/em> probably means new, but had no idea what <em>Sad<\/em> might mean.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.paralink.com\/?lang=en\/sr\">this dictionary<\/a>, <em>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438<\/em> means new and <em>\u0441\u0430\u0434<\/em> means &#8216;plantation&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Novi_Sad\">Wikipedia<\/a> translates the name as &#8216;New Garden&#8217;, and gives versions of the name in a number of languages used in local administration:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Serbian: \u041d\u043e\u0432\u0438 \u0421\u0430\u0434, Novi Sad<br \/>\n&#8211; Hungarian: \u00dajvid\u00e9k (&#8216;new territory\/region\/land&#8217;)<br \/>\n&#8211; Slovak: Nov\u00fd Sad<br \/>\n&#8211; Rusyn: \u041d\u043e\u0432\u0438 \u0421\u0430\u0434 (Novi Sad)<\/p>\n<p>In Latin it&#8217;s known as <em>Neoplanta<\/em>, and as Novi Sad in Croatian and Romanian.<\/p>\n<p>The word <em>\u0441\u0430\u0434 \/ sad<\/em> comes from the Proto-Slavic <em>*saditi<\/em> (to plant), and means vessel, container or dish in Macedonian; garden, orchard or park in Russian and Ukrainian; orchard in Czech and Polish; fruit in Lower Sorbian; and garden, orchard or plantation in Slovak.<\/p>\n<p>Sources: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/%D1%81%D0%B0%D0%B4\">http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/\u0441\u0430\u0434<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/sad\">http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/sad<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I&#8217;m going to the Polyglot Conference in Novi Sad (\u041d\u043e\u0432\u0438 \u0421\u0430\u0434) [n\u00f4\u028bi\u02d0 s\u00e2\u02d0d] in October, I thought I should find out what Novi Sad actually means &#8211; it&#8217;s the kind of thing I like to know.
