I discovered this week that in Welsh bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta<\/em>) are known as Clychau’r Gog<\/strong> (“cuckoo bells”), which I really like the sound of. They are also known as Bwtias y Gog<\/em> (“cuckoo’s boots”), Croeso Haf<\/em> (“welcome summer”), Cennin y Brain<\/em> (“crows’ leeks”), Clychau’r Eos<\/em> (“nightingale’s bells”), Glas y Llwyn<\/em> (“blue of the grove”), hosanau’r Gwcw<\/em> (“cuckoo’s socks”).<\/p>\n

In Breton bluebells are known as bokidi-koukou<\/em> (“cuckoo flowers”) or pour-bran<\/em> (“crows’ flowers\/pears”).<\/p>\n

In French they are known as jacinthe des bois<\/em> (“wood hyacinths”) or jacinthe sauvage<\/em> (“wild hyacinths”).<\/p>\n

Other names for them in English include common bluebell, English bluebell, British bluebell, wild hyacinth, wood bell, fairy flower and bell bottle.<\/p>\n
