There&#8217;s also quite a few places called simply Knock, the best known of which is the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knock,_County_Mayo\">Knock<\/a> in County Mayo in the west of Ireland , which is known as <em>An Cnoc<\/em> (the hill) or <em>Cnoc Mhuire<\/em> (Hill of (the Virgin) Mary) in Irish. <\/p>\n<p>The Irish word <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/cnoc\"><em>cnoc<\/em><\/a> (hill), from which Knock comes, is pronounced [kn\u032a\u02e0\u0254k] in Munster, [kn\u02e0\u0254k] in Aran, and [k\u027e\u02e0\u0254k] in Galway, Mayo and Ulster. It comes from the Old Irish <em>cnocc<\/em> (hill, lump, swelling), from the Proto-Celtic <em>*knokko(s)<\/em> (hill), which is also the root of:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Scottish Gaelic <em>cnoc<\/em> [kr\u0254\u0303xg] = hill, hillock, knoll<br \/>\n&#8211; Manx <em>cronk<\/em> [kr\u0252nk] = mount, tor, hill<br \/>\n&#8211; Welsh <em>cnwc<\/em> [kn\u028ak] = hillock, bump, lump, butte<br \/>\n&#8211; Cornish <em>knegh<\/em> [kn\u025bx] \/ knogh [kn\u0254x] = hillock<\/p>\n<p>A similar, though unrelated, English word is knoll [n\u0259\u028al], a hillock or mound, which comes from the Old English <em>cnoll<\/em> (hill-top, cop, summit, hillock), which is cognate with the Dutch <em>knol<\/em> (clod, ball, turnip); the German <em>Knolle<\/em> (bulb, tuber); and the Swedish <em>kn\u00f6l<\/em> (lump; bump; hump) [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/104114?rskey=PZKM9O&#038;result=1&#038;isAdvanced=false#eid\">source<\/a>].<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The element Knock is quite common in place names in Ireland, e.g. Ballyknock, Castleknock, Gortknock, Kilknock and Knockaderry [source].
