Birthday songs in various languages

The tune to the song 'Happy Birthday to you' is used in many different languages. There are also a number of other birthday songs, some of which use the same tune but different words. This section includes some of those.

'Happy Birthday to you' was written in 1893 by Patty and Mildred Hill, teachers in Louisville, Kentucky in the USA. The tune came from another song called 'Good Morning to All'.

English version

Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday dear name
Happy Birthday to you

There are a number of other joke versions in English, including:

Happy Birthday to you
I went to the zoo
I saw a great/large/huge ...
And it looked just like you

This is a version we used to sing when I was a child. You replace the dots with the name of an creature that looks like the birthday boy/girl.
