My method is to make sure the student has a firm grounding in basic mathematics and is able to enjoy learning prealgebra, not just approach it in a mechanical way. Applications to real life often will motivate students to learn the basics and advance their mathematical skills.

...MATLAB is a computer programming language common in the sciences. I first learned MATLAB during an undergraduate research internship in the neuroscience department at UC Berkeley. For that project, I programmed software to use in the creation of operant conditioning experiments with songbirds.

My most recent experience tutoring was as a paid intern with CSU Chico tutoring Child Development majors in writing and grammar in the fall of 2012. I worked with other undergraduate students, helping them edit their work and giving feedback on language and grammar using the Microsoft Word “Track Changes” tool.
