...First, I show him how to understand the words through the meaning of the passage. Then I encourage him to look up the words in his dictionary and write down the meaning according to the reading. Prior to the end of the lesson the student makes a list of the difficult words encountered.

I have taught Latin at all levels to high school students in Massachusetts and Virginia. We covered everything from vocabulary to grammar - oh that 'dreaded' passive voice - to reading and translating. We read both prose and poetry - from Livy to Cicero to Catullus, Horace, and best of all Vergil.
