New jersey income tax

To prepare New JerseyState tax return, most of the information is carried from federal Return. W-2 carries the information about the income and with holding to the state. State information is entered on the W-2input screen and all the federal input carries other income items according to the state designated.

State forms should have the following information

Name of the Qualifying head of the family

On the federal dependant screen enter the name of qualifying head for the family. If this information is empty or incomplete enter the information in New Jersey General Information screen.

Name and address of Current Employer

W-2 information screen carry the information of current employers name and address. If the information is not the information of current employee, update the current information.

Gubernatorial Election Fund

In Gubernatorial Election fund taxpayer contributes $1to provides partial public financing to qualified candidates for the office of Governor of New Jersey. $1 income taxes check off protects the continuity and integrity of the program.

Exemption

If you are member of domestic partnership in New Jersey you re not considered as married and you are not eligible for married filing joint or married filing separate filing statuses.

Part Year Resident

You are part year resident of New Jersey if you moved into or out of New Jerseyto your permanent home you need to file New Jersey income tax for the income you had earned or received while living at New Jersey.

Non Resident

You are considered as non Resident if you are a non resident and worked in New Jersey. In this case you need to file income tax return for the salary wages and other employee compensation for work performed in New Jersey.

Resident of Reciprocal State

New Jersey has an agreement with state of Pennsylvania which excludes wages earned in the nonresident state according to the reciprocity agreement

New Jersey"> Income tax with federal income is calculated on the income you earned in that year where as the federal income tax rates are calculated per each income bracket. Federal Income tax and state income tax need not be the same for each income bracket.

New Jersey Income Tax Structure

There are 6 income tax brackets for New Jersey.

If your income range is between $0 and $20,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 1.4%.

If your income range is between $20,001 and $35,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 1.75%.

If your income range is between $35,001 and $40,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 3.5%.

If your income range is between $40,001 and $75,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 5.525%.

If your income range is between $75,001 and $500,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 6.37%.

If your income range is $500,001 and over, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 8.97%.
