The city was founded by Puritans in 1630. Boston's early European settlers called the city as Trimountaine. John Winthrop Massachusetts Bay Colony's original governor called Boston as City upon a Hill first public school, Boston Latin School was established in 1635 and America's first college, Harvard College was established in 1636. Since than hard work and an emphasis on education has been the part of Boston's culture. Until the 1760s, Boston was America's largest, wealthiest city. But in 1770s Boston saw many battles. After American Revolution Boston became one of the world's wealthiest international trading ports. Boston ma became city in 1822. Until 1900s, Boston remained one of the nation's largest manufacturing centers for garment production, leather goods, and machinery industries. Since beginning Boston has flourished culturally and is known for its literary culture and artistic patronage.
But in early 20th century the city started declining which continued up to 1970s. In 1970s, Boston once again boomed after many years becoming a leader in the mutual fund industry.

City has more than 100 colleges and universities. Some of the famous colleges include Boston University, Northeastern University, Harvard University, Tufts University, Suffolk University, Wentworth Institute of Technology. Massachusetts Institute of Technology was established in Boston ma but later shifted to Cambridge in 1917.
