San Diego is located in Southern California. It is the second largest city in the state. The city is situated towards the north of border between United States and Mexico. Weather in San Diego can best be described as mild and sunny. It is a blend of coastal and semi-arid steppe region climates. July, August, September and October qualify as summer months with temperatures touching 75.4 degrees Fahrenheit (24.1 degree centigrade) on higher side. The temperatures in November, December, January, February and March touch a low of 64.9 degrees Fahrenheit (18.3 degrees centigrade).
May and June are invariably foggy. San Diego gets its rain in winter, i.e., from December to March. The city receives rainfall of 12 inches (300 mm) or less. Quite often the rains come as sudden showers.
Western part of city has a beautiful coastline along the Pacific Ocean. This coastline is embedded with many beaches. Prominent amongst these are Blacks Beach, La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Cove, Children's Pool, Windansea Beach, North Pacific Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay Beaches, Mission Beach, South Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach. City's reservoirs, El Capitan and Lake Hodges, offer ample opportunities for hiking, boating, and fishing. Those keen on wind surfing should add a visit to Lake Hodges in their itinerary. The city also has many parks. Mission Bay Park, the largest aquatic park (4,235 acres) on West Coast of United States, is located in the city. SeaWorld San Diego is another park that is worth a visit. For those whose forte is flora and fauna, Balboa Park offers a pleasurable experience. In fact, it is made up of 15 museums that have many horticultural and wildlife specimens, apart from cultural histories and artifacts. The world famous San Diego Zoo is a part of Balboa Park. Like Balboa Park, The Serra Museum too has many horticultural species to display. Presidio Park is a smaller park that is located on a hill overlooking the bays and Pacific Oceans. For camping and hiking enthusiasts, the city has Mission Trails Regional Park, which offers pristine natural surroundings of 5,800 acres. San Diego Wild Animal Park offers an experience like safari.
For gastronomical pleasures, Gaslamp Quarter is the right place. This region also has shopping and entertainment centers. There are many hotels, motels and restaurants in the city to suit different budgets. Torrey Pines, Balboa Park, and Mission Bay Golf Course and Practice Center, are the 3 municipal golf courses that can be a source of delight for any golfer. QUALCOM is the city's very own stadium for sports events. The San Diego Sports Arena also holds sports competitions. In addition, the Arena also doubles as a suitable venue for holding concerts and entertainment programs.
Almost 42 percent of the city's population is made up of non-Hispanic whites. Hispanics rank next with 25 percent. The balance is divided amongst others including non-Hispanic blacks, non-Hispanic American Indians, and non-Hispanic Asians. San Diego has lower violent crime rates when compared to national average for any city in United States. However, the same is not true relating to property crimes.
The city holds the rank of ninth most educated city in the country. There are many schools, colleges and universities in San Diego. Some, like National University, New School of Architecture and Design, University of San Diego, Pacific Oaks College and Point Loma Nazarene University are privately run. University of California, San Diego, San Diego State University, San Diego Miramar College and San Diego City College are some famous public universities and colleges in the city. Thomas Jefferson School of Law, University of San Diego School of Law, and California Western School of Law are three ABA accredited law schools in the city. The city also has a public medical school, i.e., University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine.
San Diego is famous for biotechnology research and information technology related activities. Its coastline has helped its shipbuilding and tourism industries to thrive. The city also has manufacturing units that produce defense-related parts and equipments. Agriculture and business services also make a significant contribution to the city's economy.
