Car motors

Motor

A Motor is a device that produces mechanical work from thermal energy . The car motor combines a mixture of fuel and air and ignites it in a combustion chamber .

Working

The combustion of air in the combustion chamber involves three stages namely Intake, Compression, Power and Exhaust . Air is first let in to the engine though an air cleaner and it proceeds to throttle plate. One can control the amount of air that goes into the throttle plate by the gas pedal . The air is then distributed through a series of passages called intake manifold to each cylinder . At some point after the air intake a fuel is injected into the air by fuel injector or a carburetor in case of old engines . This air-fuel mixture is compressed in the combustion chamber of the cylinder and ignited by a high voltage spark . The resultant exothermic reaction produces a blast of hot gases which is used to drive a set of gears which is connected to the axle.

Types of Motors

V Type

The V type engine has two cylinders reclined at 90 degree to each other . The V Type engine packs in a powerful crankshaft, has a rigid block and looks attractive too. The engine has a high compression ratio and is commonly used in super cars . Ferrari 599 GTB houses a monster 5999cc V12 engine, which produces 612 bhp and the car goes from 0 to 60mph in less than 4 seconds. Bugatti Veyron has a joined V8 engines to form a 64 valved W shaped engine .The arrangement produced an insane 987 bhp and blasts the car from 0 -100 in less than 3 sec with a top speed of 408 km/hr.

In line engine

In line engines have cylinders lined in a straight line, one after another . These are the most commonly used engine type. Most of the four cylinder engines are In line types .

Flat engine

Flat engines are basically V type engine whose banks have been flattened out. The flat engines are used where vertical spacing is minimal.

Electric engine

Electric engines are pretty straightforward. They take electricity from stored batteries and run a motor which has been connected to the axle of the car . In the beginning, electric car were preferred because of the fear factor that gasoline engines would explode. A magazine referred to them as explosives on wheels. But soon they died out with the internal combustion taking over 90% of the cars. With the pollution levels climbing electric cars are making resurgence.

Rotary engine

Rotary engines are small, compact and have an oblong inner shape . They have no pistons but instead use tow rotors . The rotor turns in one direction only but produces all the 4 stage in a normal combustion engine. The rotary engine guzzles upto 20% more fuel and also pollutes more. The only advantage is its small size producing the same power as engines twice its size .
