...Equations do, however, correspond to literal processes in the real world. I find it much more pragmatic to emphasize the beauty and utility of mathematical concepts and functions, and the power of as it gives students a context and appreciation that makes recall a cinch. Memorization also works, but is fraught with error under the stress of testing.
