...I understand the need for explicit rules and structure, but I also encourage students to gain a more innate sense of grammar rules by reading. Reading enables students to perceive English as a fluid, expressive form of communication, rather than an abstract and often arbitrary set of rules. It becomes much easier to absorb the language in terms of patterns, rather than laws.
