I have lived in Shanghai, with a solely Chinese-speaking host family, where I learned the language and the culture quickly over my six-month stay. I have been studying Mandarin for nearly 5 years on and off and have a great passion for the language.

...I do not "drill and kill" by only giving a lot of vocabulary words and having students memorize them. Although there is a lot of memorization to a foreign language, it is important to mix the language learning skills with culture and practical applications. For instance, isn't it useful to be able to order a meal in Chinese at the local restaurants?
