China is the second largest country, the most populated and the fastest growing nation in the world. Inevitably, travelling here counts as travelling a few nations. Its a controversial State and a pragmatic one. Its rich in culture and that culture is budding with changes and small little western influences. Travel China is still mysterious to the very world it is opening up to accommodate. Its one hell of an intriguing nation.
Places to visit:
China isn't a country - it's a different world altogether. Exploring the region certainly requires you to have a couple of years of dedicated time and unlimited patience. Its best to follow a loose itinerary here such as following the Silk Road, sailing down the Yangzi River, or exploring the Dr Seuss landscape of Guangxi Province. First thing that everyone wants to Travel China is the Great Wall. And it is redundant to highlight its importance in the itinerary here. So lets just simply say that it is the top of the list.
Beijing, the capital city is changing at a rapid pace. Mingled with the past are the effervescent sights of the Forbidden City (it was actually forbidden to enter here for 500 years!), Temple of Heaven Park and the Lama Temple, to name just a few. And how can one miss the all-famous Tiananmen Square. Also visit the Beijing Aquarium, the largest in the world and the Drum tower that was originally built in 1273!
The next stop should be Hong Kong. It is a vibrant city with sprawling sky scrapers, excellent transport system, enigmatic temples and cultural idiosyncrasies. Here, visit the various Museums of Art, History, Space and Science. You would also be mad to miss Victoria Peak. Apart from these, visit the Ocean Park, the Miu Fat Monastery, the Man Mo Temple, the Kowloon Walled City Park and the Jardine House.
Macau may be firmly back in Travel China orbit, but
the Portuguese patina on this Sino-Lusitanian Las Vegas makes it a most unusual Asian destination. Here, head straight to the Coloane Island. This place houses the Sao Paulo Museum and two glorious beaches of Cheoc Van and Hac Sa. This island is a serene and tranquil place when compared to the neighbouring Taipa Island. Taipa Island is busy with the modernization process these days and a visit is worth it. Do not miss the temples in Macau. And missing Ruinas de Igreja Sao Paulo would be a mistake. It is a 17th century Church whose glorious façade and the majestic stairway is all that remains.
Now, who needs an introduction to Shanghai It is the most modern and cosmopolitan city, probably in the entire Asia. In many ways, it is a western invention. Here, apart from visitng any museum and place you can go, do Travel China Sex culture Museum. Yes, it is a must. Do not miss the Huangpu River Cruise and the Jinmao Tower.
Another top of the list, like the Great Wall, is the Army of the Terracotta Warriors located on the outskirts of Xian Province. And do not think about visiting Tibet, unless you can double your holiday period. Tibet is another chapter.

Spring (March-April) and autumn (September-October) are the best times to visit China. But the higher altitude areas of Tibet and Qinghai are best in summer (June-September).
Everyone needs to apply for a visa. But western nationals visiting Hong Kong and Macau need no visa.
Forget driving around in China. Foreigners are rarely allowed to do that.
You can fly to China and most visitors usually land up in Shanghai, Beijing or Hong Kong. You can also get to China without flying. Exotic routes include the Laos-China, the Trans-Siberian railway, Tibet-Nepal and Xinjiang Kazakstan.
In China, getting around is fairly easy. Buses are great. Though the boat rides are fading inot being a legacy, there are still a few such as the trip between Hong kong and the Mainland. Once you settle down, renting a bike is a better option.
Do not drink tap water in China. Its unsafe. Boiled water is usually offered free of charge by most hotels.
You will need to a carry your yellow fever vaccination certificates and also the International Certificate of Vaccination to enter China.
China is vast and is changing dramatically. It is the fastest growing economy in the world today. And the evolution, the schisms between historical legacies and recent economic development is best charted in the evolving culture itself. It's not that it has completely done away with its Maoist past - it's more that the yin of revolutionary zeal is being balanced by the yang of economic pragmatism.
