Despite Argentinas recent economic woes, its canopy boasts of strikingly rich luxuries embossed with stunning natural wonders, passionate culture and a sophisticated capital city. Buenos Aires, the capital city is where you should start the journey. It is more European than South American in flavor. The city displays European architecture and its not so impressive modern improvisations. Must visits in the city include most churches such as the Basilica de Santo Domingo and the Iglesia Santa Catalina. One of the most popular tourist destinations is the Cementerio de la Recoleta. It is an unusual cemetery for popular social figures. A stroll here is like a journey to the glorious past and understanding of legacies, effectively told through marble statues and names engraved on the tomb stones. Other places you should visit are the art museums in Palermo and City center the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), Museo de la Casa Rosada, Museo del Cabildo & Catedral Metropolitana, Museo Evita and the world class theater, Teatro Colón.
And then, head to the Iguazú falls, situated in the Parque Nacional Iguazú near Puerto Iguazú. Its a beautiful waterful that falls from an amazing height of 70m. Surrounding the falls lie the pristine rainforests with its rich flora and fauna.
South of Buenos Aires province is the province of Patagonia. This region is characterized by glacier-dotted mountains, unique wildlife and Andean national parks. Península Valdés is a special treat for lovers of wildlife. This region also features the Perito Moreno Glacier of Santa Cruz - a 60m high river and the Carmen de Patagones - a beautiful colonial city. It is also home to El Chalten, a pretty village that is famous for its snow capped mountains and world-class hiking and camping. There are several other peaks here, as well.
Pay a visit to the Lake District of Argentina. It is the ski-field of the world. There are several small villages that are serene and beautiful. You can ski in winter and hike in summer. The mountain ranges and the lakes that dot the region are plenty and breath-taking.
Apart from the above mentioned, you could also visit the glacier
of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares and the UNESCO world heritage sites at Península Valdés and Quebrada de Humahuaca. To get a better feel of the countryside and to stretch your Argentinean experience, just drive around or cycle it. There are sights by the countryside, only a fool would dare to miss.
Other information:
There are very few flights to Travel Argentina from the US or Canada. American Airlines, United Airlines and Aerolineas Argentinas have direct flights to Buenos Aires. From Canada, only Canadian Airlines have flights to Buenos Aires. However, there are several flights from Europe.
If you plan to do a fair amount of travelling within Argentina (or to other South American countries), get yourself an air pass with your main ticket. Air passes offer substantial savings. They can be bought only outside South America with your international ticket.
Citizens of USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Britain and other Western European countries do not require a visa for tourist trips upto ninety days. Carry your passports. You will need to fill a landing form and get an entry stamp while entering the country and an exit stamp while leaving. Preserve the landing slip. You will need it while leaving. If you want to stay longer than ninety days, then hop around to the neighbouring countries for 24 hours (after the expiry) and return. It works.
Opt for air or bus Travel Argentina within the country. On some routes, air travel is cheaper than the buses! Buses are also great and comfortable. Railways, however, haven't shown much promise.
Make sure you carry a Spanish dictionary with you. Outside the main cities, you will only encounter a few who can speak English. A basic course in Spanish will help you.
Standard vaccinations against typhoid, polio, tetanus and hepatitis A are advised. Dengue fever is something to watch out for. Take precautions against altitude-sickness and hypothermia as well.
Thats not all. Argentines are football fanatics. One shouldn't miss a match at Boca Juniors' La Bombonera stadium, in La Boca. It stretches the Argentinean experience as far as possible.
