Rhode island travel
It is usual that big places hold more importance. But there are several small countries, states and cities that are renowned for their power, beauty or simply for their remarkable history. Mauritius, Vatican City, Nepal and Rhode Island fall into this category. Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States of America. With 400 miles of beaches and shorelines, this state is also known as the "Ocean State". Though the smallest state in the USA, it has one of the country's richest heritage in terms of historical and natural attractions. Boasting of the highest concentration of America's National Historic Landmarks, Rhode Island is a must-visit for any history enthusiast.
A remarkable and proud history
Roger Williams, who was forced to leave Massachusetts due to persecution, founded the state in 1636. He negotiated the purchase of the land from the Narragansett Indians who were living there for many years. Due to the intolerance he had experienced, Williams established a policy of religious and political freedom in the new region. Others like him soon joined him and a community advocating religious freedom was formed. King Charles 2 of England granted them power to greater self-governance and authorized the continuation of religious freedom. Rhode Island was thus the first state in America to have followed the principle of personal liberty, which governs America today. Rhode Island was also the first state to prohibit the import of slaves.
Another example of the independent spirit of the Rhode Islanders was shown during the American Revolution. They were not only the first to attack British vessels but also the first colony to renounce British governance and declare independence. The Rhode Islanders were the last of the colonies to ratify the US Constitution and recommended the addition of the Bill of Rights, giving individual liberties.
Rhode Island was also the pioneer of the Industrial Revolution in America. The success of Samuel Slater's water-powered cotton mill in Pawtucket heralded the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in America. Providence in Rhode Island became one of the major industrial cities of the country. Immigration added to the wealth and success of the state.
An island of beauty - natural and manmade
An island surrounded by water is always beautiful with a variety of marine life, wildlife and plants. Rhode Island is no different. Boasting of a coastline 400 miles long containing more than 100 public and private beaches, Rhode Island is one of the premier destinations in America for sun and surf. Clear oceans, cool breezes and sunshine combine to make this state a tiny paradise. The scenic beaches located on the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay is clean and well cared for.
With so much of history, Rhode Island is chockfull of historical buildings and sites. 17th century fishing villages, quaint farms and villages reminiscent of Colonial America, Colonial and Victorian buildings, Gilded Age Newport mansions and other such places give a touch of man-made beauty and goes well with the natural charm of the place.
