Waco texas is situated in McLennan County, Texas. Waco is situated near the confluence of Bosque and Brazos River. The geographical coordinates of the city are 3133' north, 979' West. City covers a total area of 247.4 square kilometer with only 29.3 square kilometer covered with water. City is a home of oldest Baptist university of Texas. Crawford is the suburb of Waco. The major highways connecting Waco to other major cities of Texas are Interstate Highway 35, U.S. highways 84 and 77, State Highway 6.At present the population of city is 113,726 with an average population density of 521.5 people per square kilometer.

The city is built on an agricultural village once dominated by Waco Indians. In 1830 Cherokee Indians removed Waco Indians. The first white settlement was established in 1837.In 1849 the land was divided into small blocks and each was sold at a price of 5 dollars. The people first decided to call Waco as Lamartine but George B. Erath the first rangers of Waco texas convinced people to call it Waco Village.Shapley P. Ross an Indian fighter established the first hotel in the city. By 1852 the town had Baptist and Methodist churches. Towns first newspaper Waco Era was first time published in 1854. The total population of city in 1859 was 749 people. City had lot of agriculture. Cotton was the major farming product cultivated here. Wacos economy started growing after Civil war but it began to boom after 1870.In 1871 Waco and Northwestern Railroad was built. St. Louis and Southwestern and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas lines were built in 1880.In 1884 the total population of Waco was 12000 people and it produced about 50,000 bales of cotton. By the end of nineteenth century Waco had became one of the leading producers of cotton and wool. By the beginning of 20th century the population has reached the mark of 20,000 with 163 factories, 1,300 new houses and six banks.

The city not only have commercial centers but also has some great education centers. City was once also known as "Athens of Texas." Waco Classical School was established in 1860, which became Waco University in 1861. Waco University merged with Baylor University in 1887. Paul Quinn College was opened in 1872. Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic school, was founded in 1873. Waco Academy, Waco Select School, and Leland Seminary, were also opened in 1870s. Add-Ran College started its operation in 1895, which later merged to become Christian University in 1902.
At present city is home to two colleges and one university. Baylor University is the world's largest Baptist University and also the oldest Baptist university of Texas. McLennan Community College is a two-year
community-focused learning center. Texas State Technical College is the state-supported technical college.
The schools are taken care by Waco Independent School District. There are 29 public schools with approximately 15,500 students.
