The history of the university dates from 1898, when the place on West Ham Municipal College was established. Its successor the North-East London Polytechnic was established in 1970; this later became the Polytechnic of East London and achieved the status of the University of East London in 1992. Some 8,000 full-time students are enrolled, and the university is organized into four faculties: Design Engineering and the Built Environment; the East London Business School; Science and Health; and Social Sciences. BRUNEL UNIVERSITY

Brunel is a modern technological university, named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the Victorian inventor and engineer. The university is governed by a council and chancellor, and academic work is organized into five faculties and the Brunel Institute of Bioengineering.The university is multi-sited. The largest campus is 2 km south of Uxbridge, 25 km west of central London. This red brick and concrete complex contains the departments of engineering, science, and social sciences the main core of the university which specializes in strong industrial links born of its sandwich course programmes, with a year spent in professional work in industry or commerce.
A second major campus is at Runnymede, near Egham, 18 km to the south, which has the education and design courses. Osterley is the base for geography and Earth science, health studies and sports sciences; Twickenham is the base for the faculty of arts, which was established in August 1996.The academic year operates on a two-semester system from September to January and February to June. All courses have a modular structure and each module is credit-rated, so allowing flexibility in the content of each degree. Courses are mainly for four years although some are for three and include industrial design, sciences, computing, economics, business, management, education, social sciences, law, and most branches of engineering.There is a library on each campus, and computer facilities include 500 terminals for student use.

There are five campuses: Avery Hill; Dart ford; Greenwich, which occupies part of the former Royal Naval College and the former Greenwich Hospital, and which now forms the headquarters of the university; Medway; and Woolwich. The Greenwich Maritime Institute offers postgraduate courses in maritime history and policy, and the Kings Hill Institute, located at West Malling, Kent, offers business courses. The Natural Resources Institute is located at the Medway campus. The university is administered by a Court and chancellor.
