Helping Texas students by educational grants

Not all students are able to afford a good education. Grants, loans and scholarships can help them. Here are some of these educational aid programs, grants, scholarships, and loans for students in Texas.

Early High School Graduation Scholarship Program.Awards of the cost of tuition only, up to $3,000, for eligible college students.

Students may qualify if they:

Graduate from a Texas public high school on or after 09/01/2003

Have completed either the recommended high school curriculum or the distinguished achievement high school curriculum in no more than 36 consecutive months

Have attended high school in Texas only and

Are Texas residents Good Neighbor Scholarship.

One year of tuition (fall, spring, and summer) for students from

other nations of the western hemisphere (other than Cuba), who:

are nonresidents from an eligible country

were born in & are current residents of a nation of the Americanhemisphere other than Cuba or the United States

intend to return to the eligible country upon completion of theprogram of study

are scholastically qualified for admission

Highest Ranking High School Graduate (Valedictorian) Exemption.

Available to Texas residents, nonresidents, or foreign students whoGraduate from an accredited high school in the state of Texas andare the top ranked seniors (valedictorians) of their high school.

For freshman year of study at a public college or university in Texas.

Recipient is exempt from certain charges for first two semesters.

License Plate Insignia Scholarship Program.

For individuals enrolled at least half-time.

For students with financial need.

Information may be obtained through the director of financial aid at any participating public or private, non-profit college oruniversity in Texas. Complete the Free Application for Federal

Student Aid (FAFSA) to begin the eligibility process.

Loan Forgiveness Programs

Texas residents enrolled in or intending to enroll in an eligibleinstitution to become a health care professional who are sponsoredby a rural community that is committed to providing financial support.

Must either be (1) high school student in upper 25% of class, in classof 48 or more students, or have an overall B average;

(2) a collegestudent with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; or

(3) anindividual who has a high school diploma or equivalent and demonstratesto the satisfaction of the sponsoring rural community the motivation,qualities, and abilities that lead to success in the chosen health care profession.

This competitive forgiveness loan program covers the cost of tuitionand fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation andpersonal expenses as determined by the college financial aid office.Half of the forgiveness loan is provided by the sponsoring community;half is provided by the State of Texas.

Selected student must commit to work for one year in the sponsoring community for each year of support that is received.

Reciprocal Educational Exchange Program

This program provides a waiver of nonresident tuition for students from neighboring states (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma)enrolled in certain public institutions in Texas. Students may befrom any part of the neighboring state; however, the institution musthave an agreement with a similar institution in the student's homestate, to allow Texas residents attending the other state's institutionto pay a reduced tuition rate.

State Nursing Scholarships

To provide financial assistance to encourage students to become Profes-sional or Vocational Nurses.

Only in-state (Texas) colleges or universities may participate in theprogram. Both public and private, non-profit colleges or universitieswith professional nursing programs may participate in the program.

Applicant must:

Be Texas resident

Show financial need

Register for Selective Service or be exempt from this requirement

Be enrolled on at least a half-time basis

Obtain an application from the Financial Aid Office at you collegeor university; or for more information, call the Student Services

Professional Nursing Scholarships (PNRS)

Student must enroll inclasses leading to Licensure as a Professional Nurse.

No individualaward may be for more than the student's financial need. The maximumaward is $3,000.

Student Incentive Grant Program (SIG) .

For residents or nonresidents.

For undergraduates or graduates enrolled at least half-time.

For students attending public colleges in Texas.

Students cannot be in default on a student loan.

Students cannot owe a refund on a student grant.

Males must meet draft registration requirements.

Obtain application guidelines through your public college financial aidoffice.

Texas College Work-Study Program (TCWSP).

To provide part-time jobs to eligible students with financial need toenable them to attend public and private, non-profit colleges or univ-sities in Texas.

Applicants must:

Be Texas residents

Show financial need

Register for the Selective Service or sign a statement that they are

exempt from this requirement

Enroll at least half time

Tuition Equalization Grant-LEAP (TEG-LEAP).

Available to Texas residents and non-residents who are National Merit

Finalists enrolled at private, non-profit colleges and universities inTexas. Based on financial need.

Texas Tuition and-or Fee Exemptions.

officer at the institution you plan to attend to see if you are exempt

from payment of tuition and fees at public colleges or universities in Texas. Deadlines vary. Must submit certification of eligibility.

The scholarships and programs are designed in such a way that most of the eligible students get a fair opportunity of education in Texas.
